Describing the country as an “adventure playground for the intrepid traveller”, leading travel publisher Rough Guides has included Chile in its list of 18 worldwide destinations not to miss in 2018.
The country took ninth place in a ranking headed by the city of Newcastle, and was labeled as certain to surprise visitors as “Chile is no one-trick pony. From the world’s oldest mummies in Arica to indigenous Mapuche-run tourism in Lago Budi to award-winning wineries in the Central Valley, there’s plenty on offer.”
The list included newly opened trekking routes and cities that are being revived with new offerings, together with success stories in historic conservation, drawing together countries, destinations, and activities that adventurous independent travelers should have on their radar. “This year, we wanted to include destinations that will be big news next year but also look at places that are underrated, up-and-coming, or newly back on the tourist map,” said Coralie Modschiedler, senior web editor at Rough Guides.
TEAMWORK
Under-Secretary of Tourism from Chile stressed that “in 2017 our country received global recognition from Lonely Planet, one of the world’s top travel guides, as an essential destination to visit, travel, and enjoy in 2018. Recognition by groups like Rough Guides, Lonely Planet, and National Geographic certainly gives us an edge that we must use to become a world-leading destination, with great diversity of activities to enchant international visitors when they experience places like our national parks, which have seen an annual average growth in entry numbers of 11.3% over each of the past five years.”
Meanwhile, National Tourism Service explained that “being one of Rough Guides’ top ten destinations for 2018 means being among the ten best in the world – a clear sign that we are on the right track and that we need to keep working hand-in-hand with the private sector to drive our tourism industry to even greater heights.”
