Our country continues to be a leading force in green tourism, adventure, and romantic experiences, after winning in five categories at the World Travel Awards (WTA) 2024, known world-wide as the “Oscars of Tourism”.
Chile was awarded Leading Green Destination, in recognition of the existence and dissemination of nature destinations, and the planification, development, and advancement of responsible tourism experiences that are also environmentally friendly. Chile surpassed Colombia in this category, the previous winner in 2023.
The Undersecretary of Tourism, Verónica Pardo, highlighted that “these awards are an acknowledgment of our commitment to sustainability and dissemination of unique tourism experiences. Chile has established itself as a leader in adventure tourism, thanks to the diversity of landscapes and activities ranging from sandboarding in certain dunes in the country, to trekking in Patagonia, which showcases the gorgeous landscapes that the Atacama Desert has to offer. Additionally, the Leading Green Destination and Leading Youth Travel Destination awards reflect our efforts to offer responsible and vibrant options for all kinds of travelers. We will continue our work to uphold and improve these standards, making sure that Chile continues to be an outstanding destination”.
At a global level, our country has been acknowledged as the Leading Green Destination in 2019, 2020, 2022, and 2023, thanks to the valuable initiatives implemented to discover, enjoy, and appreciate the aesthetic, ecological, and ethical aspects of green tourism.
In relation to this, Sernatur national director, Cristóbal Benítez, explained that “the continental Green Destination award has reinforced the work our institution does and our commitment to responsible tourism practices. One of our lines of work is supporting and boosting certification of different companies with Sello S (S Seal), a distinction that guarantees tourists that the multiple tourism services in Chile meet the global sustainability criteria. We will keep working so that the country maintains its leadership in both the region and the world in this area of tourism.
