Our country continues to consolidate regional tourism. In the 30th edition of the World Travel Awards (WTA) 2023 in South America, Chile was crowned the Best Adventure Tourism Destination, and the Atacama Desert was chosen as the Most Romantic Destination.
Known as the Oscar Tourism Awards, the WTA has taken place annually since 1993 and recognizes a wide variety of tourism categories, such as services and destinations.
The awards are given nationally, continentally, and internationally. In the last category, Chile was chosen as the World’s Leading Green Destination in the years 2019, 2020, and 2022; and the World’s Leading Adventure Tourism Destination in the years 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021.
Chile stands out again at regional level
Chile has been chosen as the Best Adventure Tourism Destination in South America since 2015 up until now, so this is the ninth consecutive time that Chile has won this award. In 2023 it prevails over Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Uruguay.
Likewise, the Atacama Desert has been crowned as the Best Romantic Destination in the region since 2018, so this is the sixth consecutive time that Chile has won this award. In 2023, Chile prevails over Buenos Aires (Argentina), Cartagena de Indias (Colombia), Islas Galápagos (Ecuador), Lima (Peru), Fernando de Noronha, Paraty, and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).
National Tourism Strategy 2030
The National Tourism Strategy 2030 considers adventure tourism among its prioritized experiences. AdventurePro is among the initiatives to boost this area. The route map focuses on leadership, strategic vision, legal framework, regulations, capacity creation, certification, and audit.
In addition to this, the National Plan of Motivation for Adventure Tourism and Nature in Mountains points at boosting the development of adventure, nature, and sports tourist experiences in mountains.
In terms of regional development, the strategy seeks to strengthen the role of the regions in tourism development as an economic, social, and cultural driving force, with a focus on local and the contribution of sustainable and decentralized progress.
