Andrea Soffia explains the fascinating history of Hotel Las Majadas and the palaces which make up this historic complex to us.
Placed at the intersection of Exquiel Fontecilla with José Julio Prieto, in the Pirque region, Hotel Las Majadas is perfect to connect with nature and the heritage in the mountainous region of the Metropolitan region.
At Trade News of Chile Travel we interviewed Andrea Soffia, commercial director at Hotel Las Majadas, who told us about the fascinating history of the palace, the services that the hotel offers and its association with local communities.
-Does Las Majadas belong to the history of Pirque?
-The history of Las Majadas go back as far as the 19th century when Ramón Subercaseaux bought the property. When he passed away, his children inherited the Pirque estate and Francisco, the youngest, inherited Las Majadas. On one of his journeys to Europe, his children wanted to surprise him and in 1905 he instructed the architect Alberto Cruz Montt to build a new house, which we now know as our palace.
After Francisco Subercaseaux’s death, the property was kept in the family until 1928, when it was sold to Don Julio Nieto Espínola. Once his son inherited, José Julio Nieto Espínola, the family combined for years field work and family life in social receptions. The Nieto family finally opened the park to the community in the 1980s with the Rosita Renard concerts, among other activities.

The leading role of nature in Las Majadas
Las Majadas is placed in a privileged position near the Andes Mountain range, with different activities and programs to enjoy natural environments and to visit all the vineyards in the area.
-What is your relationship with your surroundings?
–Nature is one of the leading actors in the Majadas experience and we invite you to connect with everything that it offers: its colors and scents, the fresh air in the field, the silence and the different types of life which grow here.
Our 8-hectare park is living heritage, a very special place which has more than a thousand species, with the araucarias, peumos, cypreses and centenary drought standing out. Moving around you can observe its trees that change its colors within the seasons of the year, its flowers, lakes, and the local fauna.
We also live the mountain. The magnificent Andes Mountain range draws up in front of our hotel, and it is the scene of a lot of adventures: trekking, horse-riding, picnics, sunrises, and sunsets with magical views of the Valle del Maipo.
Furthermore, our guests can also enjoy what this fertile land produces: the history and the tradition of Chilean wine with visits to the main vineyards in the area, its wineries and, of course, taste the best of its wines.
-What is your relationship with the territory and the communities?
-The relationship with the territory has been crucial for us since the first day. Nowadays, 20% of our co-workers live in Pirque, providing work opportunities for the people who live near Las Majadas. Furthermore, 20% of our suppliers come from Pirque, especially food supplies.
Moreover, we keep a constant relationship with local companies, among them vineyards from Pirque, ‘’Mercado Origen’’, La Mielería and Timoun Piti, a children’s home in Pirque.
